Is It Worth Buying a Used Car in Georgia in 2026?
In short
For someone living in Georgia, 2026 is a good year to buy: the median asking price holds around $13,500 to $14,000, exports have shrunk and choice has grown. Cars up to six years old and hybrids pay three to 7.5 times less excise. For export to Russia the gain is smaller because of the recycling fee and the ban on driving the car out. The main risk is hidden accident damage on US imports.
In 2026 the median asking price in Georgia sits around $13,500 to $14,000, exports to neighbouring countries have shrunk, and there are more cars on the local market. That helps buyers in Georgia, while export to Russia got more expensive.

The answer depends on where the car will be driven. For life in Georgia, the 2026 market favours the buyer; for export to Russia and Kazakhstan, the sums got harder.
Prices in 2026
- Median asking price in new listings: $13,500 in March, $14,000 in April, $13,800 in May, $13,700 in June (AutoBridge)
- Tbilisi: median $15,000 at about 86,000 km; Batumi $13,000; Rustavi $10,450 (snapshot of June 30, 2026)
- The average asking price fell from $17,300 at the end of 2025 to $15,067 in March 2026 (AutoBridge)
These are asking prices, not sale prices, but the direction is clear: the market has stopped getting more expensive.
Why there are more cars
Part of the cars brought into Georgia were meant for resale to Central Asia and Russia. In 2026 that flow shrank: Geostat data show passenger car exports fell 24.1% in January and February. In March about 32% of listings were fresh imports originally meant for export (AutoBridge). Those cars are now sold locally, so buyers have more choice.
What the excise reform changed
Since April 2, 2026, excise depends on age: 1.5 GEL per cc up to six years and 4.5 GEL above. Left-hand-drive hybrids up to six years old pay 0.6 GEL, left-hand-drive EVs pay nothing. Cars from 2020 onwards and hybrids got cheaper to bring in, while old cars with big engines lost value: AutoBridge reported price cuts of up to $1,500 on 2010 to 2014 models in March. More in which US cars are worth importing.
Who gains
- People who live or work in Georgia: plenty of choice, stable prices, and no notarised passport translation or local address needed to register the car
- Buyers looking for a car under $15,000: more than half of all listings, and they turn over quickly
- Anyone buying a hybrid or a car up to six years old
Who gains less
- Russian citizens: since May 15, 2025 they can't drive a passenger car out of Georgia, and Russia's recycling fee went up in 2026
- Buyers from Kazakhstan: the route runs through a Caspian ferry, VAT is 16% and right-hand-drive cars are banned
- Anyone buying an old big-engine car to resell: demand for them dropped after the reform
Where the deal goes wrong
Most cars on the market are US imports: 76% of passenger cars imported in January to April 2026 came from the US (Geostat, as reported by AutoBridge). Many went through an auction after an accident, and dealers tell the convenient story. The saving disappears if the car has a respray or rolled-back mileage. Before the deal, get a VIN check and an on-site inspection, or if you have no time to search yourself, use turnkey car sourcing.
